Mercedes Bresso, new Chair of the Committee of the Regions


The Italian Mercedes Bresso, former Member of European Parliament Socialist and member of the Committee of the Regions for years, has been elected President of the same during the first half of the fifth mandate of this organization, as its constitutive meeting held on 9 and 10 February. During the second half, from 2012, the Presidency will be on the Spanish Ramón Luis Valcárcel, President of the Assembly of the Murcia Region and member of People's Committee.


This will continue also during this mandate, the political change that has already existed in previous mandates. In his speech, the new President stressed that the Local and Regional Authorities represented in the territorial assembly to assume responsibility for the implementation of the new responsibilities arising from the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon last December 1. He also highlighted as targets of its action plan to monitor the Copenhagen conference on climate change and the development of the Strategy 2020 that happen to Lisbon, and the future financial prospects.

Finally wanted to highlight, the halo of some normalcy to his appointment gave the Committee of the Regions, and "that the only anomaly is the fact that today I am the only President of a European Union institution.
 

The constituent meeting, attended the third Vice President and Minister of Land Policy, Manuel Chaves, who moved to the members of the Committee of Regions, the 4 major priorities of the Spanish Presidency: the rapid and full implementation of the Lisbon Treaty ; economic recovery and employment in a context of sustainability, the strengthening of Europe as a global player, responsible and united on the international scene and make the Union more definitively rooted in the conscience and the will of those who lend their legitimacy, European citizens, to what to promote their rights and freedoms.
 

Third Vice President wanted to highlight the important and decisive role with Local and Regional Authorities both in the process of economic recontraction as in the European integration process, and in that sense said that the Spanish Presidency will facilitate the speedy implementation of all those new institutions created under the new Treaty and that the bodies have been strengthened, com is the Committee of the Regions, as soon as possible to develop all the powers entrusted.

 
Finally stressed that the Spanish presidency wants to put on the European agenda the issues of cooperation and territorial cohesion and multilevel governance, and therefore convened by the European Ministers of Regional Policy, next March.

 
To mark the opening of the new House Committee of the Regions also adopted new working committees, all of them, local governments are represented in EDUC Spanish, and ECOS CIVEX
