The European mayors sign pact to reduce 20% CO2 emissions

More than 500 European mayors in Brussels have pledged to reduce emissions from their cities in more than 20% by 2020 in the presence of the presidents of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, and the Government of Spain José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. The FEMP was represented by the Mayor of Vigo and President of the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate, Abel Caballero

The European Parliament has been the scene of the ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors and the place where the municipal councilors are committed to saving energy, promoting renewable energy and information campaigns among its citizens. The signing of the agreement requires them to analyze and quantify their current CO2 emissions and making public the measures used to achieve the target and evaluate their performances.
The Covenant of Mayors is an annual conference initiated by the European Commission in 2009. This year, with the addition of more than 500 mayors, the number of signatories is raised to 1,600 from 36 countries representing 120 million citizens.
