Spain, world leader in Blue Flags
Spain, with 603 blue flags recognized in 511 beaches and 92 marinas, remains at the forefront of such awards among the 36 countries of the northern hemisphere. Despite the crisis, our country has maintained the progress made last year and so, although a slight decrease in the number of Blue Flag beaches, the increase in the number of marinas has been recognized to offset the outcome. The data were released yesterday at a ceremony in which participated the General Secretary of the FEMP, Isaura Leal.
This summer 2011, one in six Spanish beaches will fly a Blue Flag, one of six Blue Flag in the world, flying in Spain. Spanish beaches have continued to improve their sanitation, health, safety, accessibility information, rescue, first aid or attention to people with disabilities.
On figures from last year, the number of Spanish Blue Flag beaches down in ten, although the marina was increased in eight. This means, says the Association for Environmental Education and Consumer (ADEAC), much of the autonomous communities and cities remain the figures of 2010, is the case of Extremadura, Basque Country, Ceuta and Melilla, with small differences in overall number (two more or two fewer flags) are the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia.
In the environment of the 36 countries of the Northern Hemisphere, the International Jury awarded the Blue Flag this year a total of 3,554 flags, 2928 for 626 to beaches and ports. Participate in the jury, together with the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE, its acronym in English), United Nations Agencies for Environment (UNEP-UNEP) and Tourism (OMT-WTO), the European Environment, the European Union for Coastal Conservation, the Union for the Conservation of Nature and the International Council of Associations of the Port Industry, among others.
