Five municipalities conducted pioneering studies of energy saving in buildings

The municipalities of Arahal (Sevilla), Granollers (Barcelona), Madrid, Segovia Santander and have been chosen to carry out studies on energy efficiency in buildings and homes, according to the Energy Assessment Program Urban Habitat sponsored by the Foundation House saves and FEMP. The actions contemplated comparative diagnostic studies and audits, in some cases, require the collaboration of neighbors.

This initiative is the result of the collaboration agreement signed by the FEMP Foundation and Save the House that, last March, with the aim of sensitizing the society about the importance of energy efficiency in buildings and the benefits it can bring economic and energy savings. The call will have been a total of 31 municipalities.

Energy efficiency studies will be conducted in an urban area of each of the selected municipalities through the development of thermography facade and other complementary diagnostic tool that may be required. The results are made public so that citizens know the importance of the municipality that can have energy losses in housing and measures to reduce them significantly.

Diagnostic Actions

The program provides two types of actions. Municipalities may opt for the development of comparative diagnosis or energy audits.

The benchmarking analysis shows the qualitative differences between inefficient buildings and "reasonably" efficient. To do this, the technicians thermography walls and roofs and data collection in new buildings, following the entry into force of the Technical Building Code, and older ones, built without energy efficiency criteria.

The energy audit goes further, because it tries to discover the problems of energy efficiency losses derived from the envelope and also make proposals for action. This measure includes thermograms of facades and roofs, but also other actions, such as energy simulations or monitoring of some homes, with the installation of thermal sensors that measure interior comfort conditions. It also aims to develop domestic consumption and historic conductivity tests, where no information on the composition of enclosures.

Municipalities committed

Over 40% of the energy used in the EU is consumed in buildings. Of this consumption, between 50% and 70% is used for heating and cooling residential and nonresidential buildings, more than half of the heating and cooling energy is lost due to inefficiency of the facades, windows and roofs .

By participating in the program, selected municipalities are committed to improving the energy efficiency of their buildings and help build a major economic and energy savings among its citizens.
